Franz Joseph Nachtwey was born January 20th, 1877 at Seulngen Province of Hanover, Germany, the son of Johann and Anna Kellner Nachtwey. His early education was obtained in his native town and later he attended college in Duderstadt. On August 2, 1894, he arrived in Lansing, IA to make his home with his uncle Theodore Nachtwey, who was then a practicing Pharmacist there, having established the first drug store in Lansing earlier.
After some years here he went to Hyland Park College (now Drake University) of Des Moines, where he completed his course in Pharmacy. His first position was in Dubuque, IA where he worked for the Wittmer Drug Store and remained there for sometime. He later came back to Lansing to assist his uncle and he later became owner of the Nachtwey Drug Store.
On November 30th, 1911, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda D. Williams at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque and Lansing has been his home ever since. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Dr. Robert A. Nachtwey and six grandchildren of Springfield, Illinois. One brother, Herman Nachtwey of Osnabruek, Germany, and several nieces and nephews of Germany. Also by his niece, Mrs. F.J. Bannach of Custer, Wis.
Mr. Nachtwey died Tuesday, October 11th at 7:15 a.m. at his home on the Park and was buried from Immaculate Conception Church Friday at 9:00 a.m. with Msgr. H.C. Scharphoff as celebrant of the Solemn Requiem Mass. Father Wm. E. Leonard was Deacon and Rev. Matthew Beelner as Sub Deacon. Msgr. Scharphoff gave a most consoling sermon and burial was in the family lot in Gethsemane Cemetery. Pall bearers were Messrs. Harold Gaunitz, Fred Schafer, Walter Aschom, Hugo Fritz, Cyril Murphy and Leo Krieger. Honorary Pall bearers from the Rosary Society were Messrs. M.L. Connor, Jos. Weipert, Leo Uterberger, Henry Beck, Cyril Hurm and Thomas Kerndt.
He was a member of the Rosary Society, the Holy Name Society, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus and the Iowa Pharmaceutical Society.
Relatives in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. William F. Nachtwey, Mrs. Theodore N. Munchoff, daughter Betty and son William Munchoff Jr., Mrs. Matthew Williams, Mr. George Hartke and Mr. John J. Mulkern, all of Chicago; Mrs. Jerome P. Bowes, of Indianapolis, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. F.J. Bannach and son Robert of Custer, Wis.; and Dr. and Mrs. Robert A. Nachtwey of Springfield, Illinois.
