Charles Martin Smith, 76, died Monday, September 30, 1991 at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center in LaCrosse.
He was born October 2, 1914 in Lansing to Charles and Grace (Hiller) Smith. On March 16, 1946 he married Ella E. Marnum in Minneapolis.
Charles was a World War II veteran, having served three years in the Navy. In 1978 he retired from Interstate Power Company after nearly 38 years of service in Minnesota and Iowa.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Evergreen Lodge # 144 and the American Legion Post #50.Surviving are his wife, Ella, two sons, Scott and Tim; three grandchildren, Aaron Smith and Brandon and Heather Sparks; and two sisters, Mary Ann Showen of Colorado Springs, CO, and Vera L. Kerno of Rockford, IL.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 3, at Our Saviors's Lutheran Church, Lansing, Pastor Marlyn Hansing officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery with military services by American Legion Post #50.
Serving as pallbearers were Ralph Bartels, Herb Hageman, Mick Meyer, Roger Champlin, Bob Kious and Allen Stahl.

After nearly 38 years of service, Charles M. Smith, Service Representative at Lansing, Iowa, is retiring effective January 1, 1979, it was announced by F.L. Lyman, District Manager of Interstate Power Company.
Charles completed 37 years and 10 months with the company, having begun work as a groundman on a line crew at West Union on February 10, 1941. He served as Maintenance and Serviceman at Waukon for 4 years, and 2 years at Lansing prior to being promoted to the classification of Service Representative at Dover, Minnesota, in 1948. In 1952, he was selected to return to Lansing as Service Representative, a position he has held since that time.
Charles was married to the former Ella E. Marum on March 16, 1946, and the couple has two sons. He enjoys woodworking, fishing, and collecting coins, clocks and antiques and plans to actively pursue these hobbies in his retirement.
