Acquaintances of Gustave A. Hansmeier, engaged for many years as a contractor and builder in Waukon, were intensely shocked and saddened upon learning he had dropped lifeless in his garden shortly after two o'clock Saturday afternoon. His health had required hospital treatment several times during the past few years and was of a nature that weakened his system somewhat, tho it did not deter him from being up about as usual. He had motored to Decorah and back the day before and had responded to greetings from acquaintances shortly before his death which came without warning.
He maintained a garden across the street from his home in a lot about a work shop (?) and this is where he fell lifeless within sight of his wife who was impelled to watch his movements because of he remarked of having been a trifle dizzy that morning.
The deceased was past 66 years of age, having been born Feb. 9, 1873. at the farm home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Hansmeier, a few mile east of Waukon. There he grew to manhood after attaining his education in the local schools and the Eell's business school. He early learned the carpenter trade and became a skillful builder and contractor. His ability in that line is fully shown in the Martin Bros. bock (sic), the Cote Theatre and the Masonic hall, the P.F. Dravis store building and large warehouse, which he built, as well as the former D.J. Murphy residence, O.J. Hager's home and other commodious residences. His high class cabinet work is evidence in offices thru out the city, all reflective of his diligence and capability and success builder. He was a meritorious citizen and dutiful in his home life, which gained for him due esteem among his wide circle of acquaintances.
His marriage to Miss Edna Hanson took place on Sept. 6, 1905, who in their childless home will deeply mourn the loss of his companionship. Surviving brothers and sisters are Simon and Charles Hansmeier, Mrs. Charles Stock, Mrs. August Sunderman, and Mrs. O.P. Martin, all of Waukon and vicinity.
Funeral services are being held this Wednesday afternoon at the Zion Reformed church, conducted by the Pastor Rev. F.E. Stucki. Pall bearers who have been chosen are Walter Hausman, Fred Ludeking, Dr. C.W. Rominger, Horace Howe, Herman Roth and Elmer Pieper.
Relatives in attendance from a distance will be Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hanson, Clermont, Iowa; R.O. Burley, Los Angeles; Mrs. Jessie Cossman, Chicago; Mrs. Clara Raymond, Winona, Minn., and Mrs. L.G. McConaty and family, Decorah.
