Ruth E. Cooper, 82, of Waukon, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at her daughter's home in Waterloo, Iowa, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 3 at Martin Funeral Home with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Esther was born May 10, 1922, on her parents' farm in Ludlow Township in rural Waukon, the daughter of Carl and Esther (Hermeier) Kugel. She was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Ruth attended elementary school in Ludlow Township and graduated from Waukon High School in 1939.

On June 1, 1941, she married Hubert Washington Cooper at the Zion United Church of Christ parsonage in Waukon. They farmed together in Allamakee County from 1941 to 1969 when they moved to Waukon. Ruth did house cleaning for several families in the Waukon area from 1965 until her retirement in 1992. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, reading, and watching television. Ruth also enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Anaruth (Garry) Snyder of Waterloo and LaVerna Benzkofer of Houston, Texas; a son, Gary (Erlyss) Cooper of Waukon; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie Winter of Postville and LaVonne Ewing and Ileta Oakland, both of Waukon; and three brothers, Donald (Barb) Kugel of Lansing, Mich., Roger (Mary Ann) Kugel of Waukon, and Eldo Kugel of Postville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Hubert, who died March 21, 1987. Honorary casketbearers were Robert Dietz, Donald Oakland, and Richard Cooper. Casketbearers were Mike and Darren Snyder, Todd Benzkofer, Jim Moeller, Terry Frush, and Terry Winter.
