Obituary - John Burroughs

Funeral services were held Thursday morning of last week at St. Joseph's Church, New Albin, for John Burroughs, who passed away Monday at the Veterans Hospital in Waukon.

He was born Oct. 2nd 1868 in Dubuque county, a son of Stephen Burroughs and Elizabeth Duff Burroughs. He came to Allamakee county as a youth and the family lived near Dorchester and Caledonia, Minn., for many years.

He was educated in the rural schools and on April 19, 1886 was married to Alice Ameilia Sheriff who preceded him in death Oct. 8th, 1950. He then went to live with a daughter, Mrs. John O'Hara of near Waukon and last spring came to New Albin to make his home with a son, Lawrence.

Mr. and Mrs. Burroughs were the parents of several children, two of whom preceded them in death. Immediate survivors besides the children mentioned above include his son William, Waukon; Mrs. Henry Schultz, Dorchester; Manford, Victor; Harvey, Garrison; Mrs. Joe Creasey, Santa Monica, Calif.; Mrs. Lydia Parker, Calif.; Jessie Burroughs, Caledonia, Minn.; two brothers, David and Ephriam of Dorchester vicinity and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Sheriff, of Lansing; 36 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, besides a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Burroughs was a well known farmer and served as a mail carrier out of Dorchester until his retirement some years ago.

Father John Costelloe offered the Requiem Mass and said the final prayers at the Catholic cemetery near New Albin. Pall bearers were Robert and Roland Burroughs, Raymond and Wilfred Schultz, Merlin and Forrest Sheriff. Among the out of town relatives and firends attending the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Goerdt, Dyersville; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Burroughs and Delbert, Garrison; Mr. and Mrs. Manford Burroughs, New Hartford; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Helmes, Dysert; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Rolfes, Garrison; Delmar Burroughs, Baraboo, Wis.; Mrs. and Mrs. Al Schara, Sauk City, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. W.
