Loren Bellows, Former Marshal, Passes Away

Loren A. Bellows, 85, a resident of Postville and community until October of last year, passed away Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mae Kascht, in Waterloo. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday afternoon in the Schutte funeral parlor by the Rev. J. Ian Fraser, pastor of the Community Presbyterian church. Burial was in Postville cemetery.

During the many years Mr. Bellows lived in Postville, he was closely associated with the business affairs of the town. In 1912 he was appointed marshal, street commissioner and water works superintendent by the late Mayor P.J. Beucher. He held all three jobs for 12 years. Then in 1924 he dropped his street commissioner position to devote more time to his marshal and water works jobs. He held the two positions for many years. He was overseer for the poor for several years. In recent years he devoted his entire time to the water works superintendency, retiring in 1936.

Loren A. Bellows was born April 3, 1854, at Elkhart, Indiana, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Bellows. In 1863 he came to Hardin, Allamakee county, Iowa, and lived continuously in this locality until going to Waterloo.

On November 19, 1873, he was married to Mary E. Taylor. To them were born seven children. One son, George, preceded his father in death. The surviving children are William, of Jamestown, N. Dak.; Justin, of Postville; Austin, of Bayfield, Wis.; Frank, of Dubuque; Lee, of Churches Ferry, N. Dak.; and Mrs. Mae Kascht, of Waterloo. Mrs. Bellows passed away December 27, 1934.

In addition to spending many years of his life as a town official, Mr. Bellows was engaged in farming and at one time operated a Postville hotel. He purchased a service station in June, 1936, and retained ownership of it until four weeks ago when he sold it to Burr Cook.

All of his surviving children, with the exception of Austin Bellows, whose wife is ill, and William Bellows of Jamestown, N. Dak., were present at the funeral.
