Robert O. Back, age 81, of Lansing died Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Veterans Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services were held Saturday, May 1 at the Harpers Ferry Community Center. Interment will be at a later date.
Robert was born July 28, 1928 at Bluff, MO. He grew up in Oswego, KS and served in the U.S. Navy in Guam. Robert lived in Waterloo and Tripoli and later retired to Lansing.
He married Laurel Sterns, they later divorced. He later married Sallie Martin August 18, 1962. Robert was a retired machinist for John Deere as well as a well-known horseshoer and horse breeder. He was also an avid fisherman, gardener, pie baker and lure maker. His friends all have a great “Bobby Back story” to tell.
He is survived by his wife, Sallie of Lansing; children, Michael (Betty) of Dunkerton, Pat of Evansdale, Lorna (Mark) Davis of Mountain Home, AR, Linda Hartsfield of Burlison, TN, Melissa (Jeff) Bruch of Sumner, and Michelle (Jared) Kelber of Liscomb; three sisters, Alice Peyton of Waterloo, Maudie Syhlman of New Albin, and Mary Ellen of Clear Lake; two brothers, Chuck of Waterloo and Jimmie Dale of Evansdale; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Bill; and sisters and brothers, Dorsey, Lester, Ray Nona Belle, Della and Mae.
The Thornburg-DeVries Funeral Home of Lansing was in charge of arrangements.
