Odin Joseph Monserud

(September 20, 1925 - December 10, 2009)
Odin J. Monserud, 84, of Waukon, IA, died Thursday, December 10, 2009, at Odyssey Hospice House in Mesa, AZ. Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 1st, at 11:00 AM at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville, IA, with Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Inurnment with graveside military rites will be at Waterville Lutheran Cemetery, Waterville. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Friday, April 30th, at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Odin Joseph Monserud was born on September 20, 1925 on the rural Waterville, IA, farm of his parents, Walter H. and Dora (Olson) Monserud. He was baptized and confirmed at Waterville Lutheran Church, where he remained a life-long member. Odin attended Waterville Schools as well as further education while in the military. He farmed with his father and brothers until 1953 when he joined the US Air Force. Following his discharge in 1955 he returned to Waterville where he farmed and drove school bus for several years until a back injury forced him to change occupation. He then began a career in the insurance business that lasted more than 30 years. On June 24, 1951 he married Margaret Benson at Waterville Lutheran Church. Margaret died in 1994. On June 12, 1997 he married Pauline Krsek at St. Ann’s – St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry.
Odin was an active member of Waterville Lutheran Church where he held a variety of offices. He was also a member of Kiwanis Club, Lutheran Brotherhood, and the Switzerland of Iowa Harmonizers, a local barbershop group. He liked fishing, traveling, playing cards, and attending community events to visit with family and friends. The past 20 years he has enjoyed spending part of the winter in Arizona.
Survivors include his wife Pauline of Waukon; 2 sons, David (Monica) Monserud of Waterville and Dale (Gina Bragdon) Monserud of Colchester, CT; a step-daughter, Linda (Tom) Puls of Witoma, WI; 2 step-daughters-in-law, Sharon Krsek of Evansdale, IA and Rosie (Mitch) Robinson of Cedar Falls, IA; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Wilmer Monserud of Waterville. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Margaret; a brother, Norman Monserud; a sister, Dorothy Olson; 2 step-sons, Donald and David Krsek; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Krsek.
Honorary bearers are Mike, Jonathon, and Tyrell Monserud, Bob and Joe Weipert, David Fish, and Randy Wild.

Odin was grandson of O.H. and Milla Mathea (Bottolfsen) Monserud. Great grandson of Nils and Maren (Larsen) Bottolfsen. Great Great Grandson of Bottolf and Marthe (Andersdatter) Bottolfsen.
