Edward John Handke, 89, of Postville died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at his home following a long illness. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, February 17 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, with Rev. Gary Catterson officiating. Burial was in the Sears Cemetery in rural Guttenberg.
Ed was born May 3, 1920 in Sears to Oswald and Minnie (Lundt) Handke. He attended country schools. He served honorably in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.
After Ed returned from service, he was united in marriage to Margaret Joan Jenkins January 24, 1945 in Atchinson, KS. They celebrated 65 years of marriage. Six children were born to this union.
He was an instructor in Heavy Equipment at Geiger Field in Spokane, WA. Ed did over the road trucking for Handke and Sons and later went into construction for many years as Handke Excavating and Materials.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Handke; six children, Edward (Patricia) Handke of West Union, Kathryn “Dolly” Sheckler of McGregor, Allen “Korkie” (Cindy) Handke of Fort Worth, TX, Karen (Roger) Hatley of Monticello, AR, Jeffrey (Alexis) Handke of Binghamton, NY, and Steven (Corine) Handke of Mabel, MN; one sister, Mabel Rantzow of Spokane, WA; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents; seven siblings, Leona Doerring, Lydia Schulte, Caroline Engler, Eleanor Eggers, Albert Handke, Larry Handke and Delores King; and one grandson, David William Kugel, Jr.
