Ben L. Martindale, Allamakee County Sheriff, Is Dead

Waukon, Iowa - Ben L. Martindale, sheriff of Allamakee county, died at his home in this city Sunday after a long illness. Rev. Van Nice, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Walton, conducted the funeral service Wednesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery near Rossville. The Masonic order had charge of the ceremonies. The local camp of Spanish-American War Veterans and the local Legion post members marched in the long column to do honor to brother and comrade.

Benjamin Leland Martindale was born on a farm in Jefferson township, south of Waukon, October 1, 1875. He was widely known as an electrician with telephone and power companies and was in the employ of the Paint Creek Telephone company last spring when he entered the primaries for the office of sheriff. Mr. Martindale served with Company I of Waukon in the Spanish-American war, with the rank of top sergeant, and was a member of Albert M. Stewart camp, No. 6 United Spanish-American War Veterans.

He is survived by his wife and three children - Robert, aged 8; Helena, 5; and Donald, 3. He is also survived by one brother, Harry Martindale of this city, and one sister, Mrs. A.M. Smith of Stockton, Ill.

The business houses of Waukon closed their doors during the funeral in tribute to Mr. Martindale's memory.
