Two Die in Highway Crash

Mrs. Matthias J. Freilinger, 55, of Volney was killed at approximately 3:45 p.m. Friday afternoon, June 12, when the car she was driving struck a bulk milk truck on the Yellow river highway near the Roy Smith farm place about four and one half miles northeast of Monona.

Her mother, Mrs. John Moore, 79, who was a passenger in the car, died Saturday morning, June 13, at about 6:30 a.m. at Waukon Veterans Memorial hospital of multiple fractures and lacerations.

Highway Patrolman Henry Anderson of Waukon, who investigated the accident, stated that Mrs. Freilinger and her mother were returning home from Waukon. Her car struck the milk truck's left rear dual wheels as the vehicles met.

Charles W. Tollefsrud, 43, of Decorah was driving the milk truck, collecting milk for the Volney Cheese Co., Inc. He was not badly hurt. He told Anderson that he saw the car coming, and tried to stay as far to his right as he could, but could not avoid the crash.

After the impact, the truck rolled into the ditch and came to rest on its left side. Tollefsrud's son, Daryle, 11, was riding with him. He was not injured.

Double funeral services were held for Mrs. Freilinger and Mrs. Moore at St. Patrick's church, Monday morning, June 15, with Rev. William J. Menster officiating at the funeral mass.

Burial of Mrs. Freilinger was in St. Patrick's cemetery at Monona and of Mrs. Moore was in St. Joseph's cemetery at New Albin.
