Harlan Foels Services

Funeral services for Harlan Foels were held Thursday, December 24, 1992 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casketbearers were Neil VanHorn, George Kuehl, Ronald Foels, John Foels, Dennis Foels, Jerald Kleve, and Loren Foels.

Harlan Walter Foels, son of Albert George and Esther Dorothy (Sander) Foels, was born January 10, 1920 on a farm in Post Township, Allamakee County, north of Postville, Iowa. He passed away Monday, December 21, 1992 at his home in Postville. He had reached the age of 72 years, 11 months and 11 days.

On May 27, 1937 he graduated from Postville High School. He was married to Harriet J. Marfilius on June 18, 1941 at Farmersburg, Iowa. To this union two sons were born. The family lived on a farm northeast of Postville. Harriet died December 5, 1972.

On July 11, 1975, Harlan was married to Luella Schlaake.

Harlan sold Funks and Renks Seed Corn for many years. He also operated a small business in which he sharpened saws and chain saws, tilled gardens and mowed lawns and removed snow.

Harlan was a member of St. Paul Lutheran church and had served on the City Council for the town of Postville.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriet and a brother, LeRoy Foels.

Surviving are his sons, H. Dean (Shirley) Foels and Calvin (Betty) Foels, all of Postville; 4 grandchildren, Michael and Steven Foels of Des Moines, IA, Karsten of Postville, IA, and Christa of Cedar Rapids, IA, and a brother, Robert (Leona) Foels of Elgin, IA. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Ruby Foels of Postville, and Irene Reinke of Monona, and a brother-in-law, Dayton (Margaret) Marfilius of Monona.
