Walter Benjamin Fiet, son of Conrad and Caroline (Flage) Fiet, was born March 1, 1901 in Ludlow Township, Allamakee County, north of Postville, Iowa, on the Fiet family farm. He died Sunday, July 11, 1993 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville. He was 92.

Walter was baptized April 21, 1901 by the Rev. E. W. Engelke and confirmed April 18, 1915 by the Rev. H. F. Sinning, both in the Bethlehem Presbyterian church, rural Postville. He attended the rural schools, Ludlow No. 8 and Ludlow No. 5.

On Aug. 9, 1923 he was married to Esther Mary Hansmeier at the home of her parents. They had a daughter, Delois. They farmed in Ludlow Township until 1948. They built a new home beside the Bethlehem Church where Walter lived until 1985. He moved to an apartment in the Mott Manor in Postville. In August of 1991 he suffered a stroke and became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. In September, 1992 he was transferred to the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.

Walter served as the custodian of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church for 45 years. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening. His greatest joy was his family -- his grandchildren and great grandchildren were very special to him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Esther, who died Aug. 19, 1979; four brothers, John, Edward, Paul and Albert; and three sisters, Lydia Fiet, who died in infancy, Minnie (Mrs. Ed Stock) and Mary (Mrs. Ed Ludeking).

Surviving are his daughter, Delois (Irvin) Flage of Postville; two grandchildren, Dr. Daniel (Dana) Flage of Harrisonburg, Va. and Deborah (Joel) Timmerman, R.N. of Decorah; four great grandchildren, Tristan and Angela Flage and Anna and Kerri Timmerman; and a sister Martha Winke of Waukon.

Walter was a life-long member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services for Walter Fiet were held Tuesday, July 13, 1993 in the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville. The Reverend James Elvig officiated. The organist was Shirley Brainard. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Casketbearers were Leonard Stock, Robert Fiet, Delbert Fiet, Robert O. Stock, Ben Fiet and James Winke.
