Dennis Winters, 55, of Lansing died of cancer Monday, November 16, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 19 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Rev. Daniel Knipper, Mgsr. Edward Lechtenberg and Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was held in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing. Hanson Funeral Home of Waukon was in charge of arrangements.
Dennis Gene Winters was born October 5, 1954 in Waukon, the son of Delbert and Marie (Sanderson) Winters. He attended Waterville Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School.
August 3, 1974 he married Barbara Ryder at St. Patrick Church, Waukon. They have lived their married life together in Lansing. Since 1972, Dennis worked for John Deere Lansing Garage as a mechanic and later moved up to Allamakee Implement, Waukon, where he was the service manager until present time.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing and served on the Lansing Fire Department for 20 years. With some friends in the middle 1970s, Dennis helped to start the Mississippi Valley Sportsman Club. Dennis enjoyed and was an avid hunter, especially deer hunting that was an intergenerational activity with his sons, son-in-law, grandsons and friends. His love for the Mississippi River led him to many camping, boating and fishing experiences, especially with his grandchildren. Dennis had the gift of hospitality as his home was always open to everyone, enjoying cookouts and storytelling. In the past few years he had been involved with woodworking - from remodeling homes to special projects for family and friends. The greatest joy Dennis found in life was spending time with his wife, family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Barb Winters of Lansing; three sons, Jared (Bridget) Winters and their children, Julia and Alex of Windsor, WI, Corey (Lynn) Winters and their children, Alivia, Lily Rose, Aidan and Nathanial of Tipton, Heath (Andrea) Winters of Genoa, WI and Krista (Jamie) Rasque and their children Brandon, Cade, Ethan and Isaac of Dodge, WI; his mother, Marie Winters of Waukon; siblings Ron (Kim) Winters, David (Ellen) Winters, Brad (Patricia) Winters, Janet (Arne) Beneke and Becky Huck; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Delbert Winters.
Casketbearers were Tim Manning, Tom Frauscht, Tony Diersen, Dan Lyons, Dennis Manning and Chad Winters. Honorary casketbearers were Leon Mohn, Barney Diersen, Dave Schmelzer, Gary Weymiller, Dan Delaney, Harvey Halvorson, Pat Ward, Bill Curran, staff of Waukon Implement, and members of the Lansing Fire Department and Mississippi Valley Sportsman Club.
