Loma Pearl Nykkanen 1938-2009

Loma Pearl Nykkanen, 71, of Waukon passed away in the Sacred Valley in Cusco, Peru Thursday, November 5, 2009, due to lung failure. Services will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Waukon Saturday, November 21 at 11 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Loma was born August, 17, 1938 in Los Angeles, CA. She graduated from Hollywood High School and worked for Pacific Bell Telephone Co. 30 years before retiring. Loma shared her passion for photography with her husband. She graduated from the Tri-Community Photography Center in Covina, CA and had several photos published in magazines and newspapers. Loma loved to travel and to garden.

After moving to Iowa, Erik and Loma joined the Heritage Club. She was a member of the Browning Club of Waukon, the American Legion Auxiliary of Harpers Ferry, and the VFW Auxiliary of Lansing; was a Master Gardener; and served on the Board of Directors at Nashua Research Farm for Allamakee County, as Senior Vice Commander of the La Crosse Unit 521 Ladies Auxiliary, and as the historian for the State of Wisconsin Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Loma is survived by her husband, Erik; her brother, Robert (Birgitta) Porter of San Bernardino, CA; her sister, Joan (Richard) Sweeny of Alexandria, VA; two daughters, Michelle Barbari of Long Beach, CA and Yvette Barbari of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. She is also survived by two step-daughters, Annette (Phil) Quaderer of Commerce Twp., MI and Erica (Jeff) Hanson of Waukon; a step-son, Robert Nykkanen of Detroit, AL; her sisters-in-law, Leila (Paul) Meyers of Yucaipa, CA and Linda (Mike) Pittman of Del Valle, TX; her brothers-in-law, David (Diane) Nykkanen of Oak Park, MI and Bernard (Sidney) Nykkanen of Wilmington, NC; five nieces; four nephews; and 10 grandchildren.

Loma will be greatly missed by all, including her “adopted” granddaughter, Jessica Cepeda and family of Decorah.
