Harold Elmer "Hoot" Meyer, 85, Postville, Iowa, died Thursday, November 12, 2009, at Northgate Care Center, Waukon, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Harold was born on August 3, 1924, in Postville, Iowa, to Fred and Bertha (Kuhse) Meyer. Harold was baptized on September 3, 1924, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Postville, Iowa, by the Rev. E. Schmidt. He was also confirmed at the same church on November 13, 1938, by the Rev. Frederick Ludwig. He graduated from Postville High School in 1942.
Harold was united in marriage to Doris Mae Ellis on September 6, 1947, in Day Township, Marathon County, Wisconsin. Three children were born to this union. Harold drove stock truck for most of his life and drove milk truck while his brother was in the service. He owned and operated Meyer's 66 Cafe in Postville, Iowa, with his wife. He also delivered the Postville Herald until October 2009. Harold enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, deer hunting and helping others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his children, Linda (Donald) Muchow, Luana, and Terry (Robin) Meyer, Postville; five grandchildren, Dustan (Julie) Berns, Derek (Jessica) Muchow, Kyle Muchow (special friend, Kristina Willis), Leah (Andrew) Hennessy and Jeremy Meyer (special friend, Erin Moore); nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Fritz (Shirley) Meyer, Monona, Don "Doc" Meyer, Postville, and Gerald "Pete" Meyer, Postville; and three sisters, Joan Plaht, Postville, Darlene (Harlan) White, Postville and Marlene (Willis) Livingood, Postville.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris Meyer in 1994; one son, Larry Meyer and two brothers, Richard Meyer and Roland Meyer.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 16, 2009, at 11:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Steve Brackett will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2009, from 2 - 5 p.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
