VIROQUA - Iva Marie Vance, 85, of Viroqua died on Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at her home.

Marie was born on Sept. 2, 1924, on the home farm in Luana, Iowa, to Albert and Emma (Leppert) Oelberg. She graduated from Waukon High School, Waukon, Iowa, in 1942. Marie worked as telegraph operator during World War II. In 1945, she was a cadet nurse, and in 1949, she graduated from the Norwegian School of Anesthesia in Chicago and then worked as a RN and a nurse anesthetist in hospitals in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin, finishing her career at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. In 1950, Marie married Albert Howes, and they had two children, David and Susan, and in 1959, she married Eugene Vance and to this union they had five children: Kyle, Doris, Jeana, John and Roberta "Tina."

Marie is survived by her children, Dr. David Howes (Dr. Ruth Rosenthal), Susan Howes, Kyle Vance, Jeana Vance, John Vance and Roberta "Tina" Vance; 10 grandchildren, Jonathan, Jessica, Antonia, Jennifer, Joshua, Sara, Brenton, Christopher, Emma and Jimmy; four great-grandchildren, Amanda, Delilah, Karah and Natalie; one brother, Kermit "Kem"; and two sisters, Beulah and Sarah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene Vance, in 1973; daughter, Doris Riley, in 2003; and five brothers, Andrew, Charles Frances, George, Chris and Harva.

Blessed be our memory of Marie.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker St. (Hwy. 56), Viroqua. Phillip "Bud" Schultz will officiate, with burial in Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Friday at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home.
