Doris Loretta Svebakken

Doris L. Svebakken, 85, of Waukon, died Sat., Aug. 25, 2001, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wed., Aug 29, at 1:30 p.m. at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Doris Loretta Davis Svebakken was born Aug 23, 1916 on a farm in the Dry Hollow area of rural Waterville. Her parents were Arthur and Pauline Belle (Cayton) Davis. Doris was baptized and confirmed at OWPC Lutheran Church and attended the rural "Bigfoot" school and Waterville High School. On May 26, 1932, Doris married Clarence Svebakken at the parsonage of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. They farmed together in rural Waterville for 25 years. Doris did a lot of sewing and made many wedding dresses for people as well as worked as a seamstress for the Inside Story in Waukon for many years. Doris also was a cook at the Waterville School and a telephone operator at the Waterville switchboard. Since 1988 she has lived in Waukon. Doris was a member of OWPC Lutheran Church and WELCA. She was an accomplished seamstress and liked to sew, embroider, crochet, and quilt. She also liked to garden and can, read, listen to music, and dance. She enjoyed spending time and visiting with her friends as often as possible. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; two sister, Dorothy Hamm, and Lola Cahalan; a brother, Jay Davis; a grandson-in-law, David Miller; and a great-grandson, Justin Thias. Survivors include one daughter, Janet (Eugene) Thias, of Lansing; one son, Roger (Llonamae) Svebakken of Spring Valley, MN; three grandchildren, Wendy (Leo) Gansen Jr., of Epworth and Deanne Normann, and William (Cindi) Thias, both of Clermont; 10 great grandchildren; and 7 great great grandsons. Honorary casketbearers are Gordon and Donna Gilbertson, Rod and Evonne Bloxham, Don and Susan Mower, and Terry and Karen Hermeier. Casketbearers are Leo Gansen Jr., James B. Normann, Damien Miller, Terry Miller, Bill Thias, James E. Normann, Mikel Normann, and Eric Gansen.
