Darwin Kenneth Niemann

Funeral services for Darwin Niemann were held Saturday, August 18, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Richard Hanson officiated, assisted by Jeff Corson. Marian Schutte was the organist, with special music by Karla Johnson, a violin solo by Michele Niemann, and a poem read by Jesi Burns. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Darwin Kenneth Niemann, the son of Kenneth Niemann and Irene (Schroeder) Niemann, was born July 19, 1935 on a farm near Fredericksburg, Iowa. He passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at his home in Postville, at the age of 66 years and 26 days. Darwin had been under the care of the Winneshiek County Home Health Hospice of Decorah.

He was baptized August 11, 1935 in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Fredericksburg and confirmed April 2, 1950 in St. Peter Richfield Lutheran Church at Sumner, Iowa, by the Reverend Diemer. Darwin graduated from Fredericksburg High School. He served in the U. S. Army from 1958 to 1960.

Darwin was married to Verla Brandenburg on August 7, 1960. To this union three children were born, Susan, Darla, and Dennis.

Darwin was in the Lumber business for over 30 years. They first lived in Fredericksburg and moved to Postville in 1961. In 1983 they moved to Stoddard, Wisconsin. Verla died November 5, 1986.

On October 5, 1991 Darwin was married to Sharon "Pat" (Meyer) Porterfield at Postville. Darwin enjoyed fishing and woodworking, building many items for his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Verla, a son, Joey Porterfield, one brother, Gary Niemann, a sister-in-law, Nancy Meyer Ulrich, and two brothers-in-law, Kent Corson and Robert "Sonny" Kerr, Jr.

Surviving are his wife, Pat, his children, Susan and husband, John Kostman, of Mt. Vernon, IA, Darla Niemann of Waukon, IA, Dennis Niemann and wife, Karla, of Yelm, WA, Jaci and husband, Craig Burns, of Postville, Brad Porterfield of Manly, IA, and Becky and husband, Joe Barlow, of Clear Lake, IA.
