Catherine Elizabeth Mannion

Catherine Mannion (Sorenson), eldest daughter of Olvin H. and Esther O. Sorenson of Waterville and later of Waukon, beloved mother of Beverly, Barbara , Patricia, John and Susan, loving grandmother of 12 and revered great-grandmother of eight, left us to go to her heavenly home Sunday, June 7, 2009.

Born Catherine Elizabeth Sorenson December 5, 1922, she was a member of the "Greatest Generation," a farm girl during the Great Depression, a Navy wife during World War II, and a Registered Nurse until her retirement. She attended public school in Waterville, where she graduated third in her high school class in 1940, the same year she was a member of the Iowa All-State Girl's Basketball Team. She graduated from nursing school at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and received her Bachelor's Degree some years later from the University of Redlands in California.

Her life-long thrift, a habit from the depression, did not prevent her generosity to family and Church, and her passionate support of social causes. It also did not prevent Mom from traveling to exotic destinations (on a budget!) and skiing on her favorite Sierra Nevada slopes (free for seniors!). She was greatly loved, an excellent role model, and she will be greatly missed. "Her children arise up, and call her blessed."
