Jared Walter Mahr
Jared Walter Mahr, 20, of Waukon died Saturday, June 20, 2009 following injuries received in an automobile accident north of Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dorchester, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Dorchester. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 24 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3 p.m. scripture service.
Jared Walter Mahr was born May 24, 1989 in La Crosse, WI, the son of Gary Walter Mahr and Judy Elizabeth Schellsmidt. He spent his early years in Dorchester and then moved to Mabel, MN, where he attended school through his junior year. He moved back to the Dorchester area and graduated from Waukon High School in 2007. Jared was currently employed building bridges for Minowa Construction.
Jared loved anything to do with the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling and anything else he could do outside. He liked music and loved to dance. Jared enjoyed people and made friends easily. He had a constant smile and loved to entertain and make people laugh wherever he was. His family was very important to him and he'll be remembered as a loving brother to his sister and caring godfather to his nephew, Jackson.
Survivors include his father, Gary (fianceé Kelly) Mahr and of Waukon; his mother, Judy Schellsmidt of Onalaska, WI; a sister, April Elizabeth Mahr of Onalaska, WI; a nephew, Jackson Mahr; maternal grandparents, Evangeline Schellsmidt and Robert Schellsmidt, both of Caledonia, MN; paternal grandparents, Marianne and Walter Mahr of Dorchester; aunts and uncles, Steven (Diane) Schellsmidt, Patrick (Wanda) Schellsmidt, Thomas Schellsmidt, Shirley (Arnold) Zezulka, Matthew Schellsmidt, Daniel Schellsmidt, Kristy (Darrell) Benrud, Barbara Schellsmidt, Connie (Paul) Thimmesch, and James (Stephanie) Schellsmidt, Theresa (William) Amunrud, Kristine (Steven) Stock, Patricia (Jerald) Oakes, Francis Mahr, Mark (Julie) Mahr, Luke (Jan) Mahr, Michelle Mahr, Susan Fahey, Raymond (Donna) Mahr, Casey (Devora) Mahr, Amy (Kim) Welch, and Walter Jr. (Traci) Mahr; as well as numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by an uncle, Joseph Mahr.
All of Jared's friends are designated as honorary casketbearers. Casketbearers will be Josh Amunrud, Brandon Mahr, Nick Mahr, Mason Fahey, Clint Zezulka, and Sean Onsgard.
___________________________________________________________Single-Vehicle Accident Claims Life of Waukon Man, Injures Three Others
Saturday, June 20, at approximately 8:21 p.m., the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office received a report of a one-vehicle accident on County Road A16, just east of its intersection with Bluff Road, near Dorchester. The initial accident report from the Sheriff's Office indicates that a vehicle driven by 20-year old Jared Walter Mahr of Waukon was eastbound on A16 when it left the roadway and rolled over.
The report also indicates that Mahr was ejected from the vehicle and, after being transported to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident. Three passengers in the vehicle also sustained injuries, including 21-year old Bryan Lee Wilhemson of Spring Grove, MN, who was transported to St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse, WI, and 22-year old Stephanie Jacqueline Nosek of Lansing and 16-year old Nickolas Taylor Reynolds of Rochester, MN, who were both transported to Gundersen-Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Both Wilhelmson and Reynolds have since been released, but Nosek remains a patient and is listed in good condition as of press time Tuesday, June 23.
The accident remains under investigation by the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office. Assisting at the scene of the accident were the Eitzen, MN Fire Department, Caledonia, MN Ambulance, Waukon Fire Department, Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance, Houston County, MN Sheriff's Office, and the Iowa State Patrol.
