Kenneth Theodore Green, of Decorah, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. He was 82.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 1, at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Tom Pietz, Rev. Allen Vik, and Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Casket bearers were Tim Green, Jason Barclay, Christopher Green, JB Ruiz, Nick Green, Nolan Green, Neal Beck, and Lee Beck. Honorary casket bearers were Beth Green, Kathy Green, Jenny Green, Emily Ruiz, Gabriella Green, Natalie Green, Katherine Green, and Lydia Beck. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah.
Kenneth Theodore Green was born August 7, 1926, in St. Charles, Ill., to Kenneth and Elaine (Stoessel) Green. He was raised on Maplewood Farm, Castalia, and graduated from Postville High School. He married Phyllis Erickson August 22, 1948, in Decorah. They commemorated their 60th wedding anniversary with a celebration at Hotel Winneshiek in August 2008. They raised their family in Postville and Eldridge. Ted was fond of saying, "Our family is the only crop that counts."
Ted worked in the procurement department of Oscar Mayer for 39 years before retiring in 1986. He farmed in Winneshiek County until the day of his death.
Ted enjoyed memberships at Decorah Lutheran Church, Oneota Questers, Oneota Country Club and Masons. His leadership was valued on the Postville Citizens State Bank Board, Postville City Council and Postville Fire Department. He was honored by the Soil and Conservation Service with the Landlord Tenant Award, Woodland Management Award and Windbreak Award. He was a former Winneshiek County 4-H President, Iowa FFA President, and earned the FFA's American Farmer Degree.
Ted left a legacy of extensive soil conservation practices, woodland management that included his sugar bush, and the planting of thousands of trees. He was known as a thoughtful and generous gentleman. The example of his integrity continues to guide the generations who follow him.
Ted was loved by his family which includes four generations. The family cherishes many happy memories of events at Maplewood Farm.
Ted is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his children: Bill (Marilyn) Green of Ossian, Jim (Chris) Green of Long Grove, Fred (Robyn) Green of Edina, Minn., Joe (Trina) Green of Lena, Ill., and Pat (Louis) Beck of Buckingham; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Edward (Kay) Green of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; and his sister, Elaine Ryan of Lansing.
