Roland Gray
Roland Keith Gray, of Postville, passed away May 2, 2009, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah. He was 87. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, May 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. Greg Hamm officiated. Burial was at the Postville Cemetery. Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 5, from 4-7 p.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, and one hour before services at the church.
Casket bearers were Keith Meyer, Doug Ruckdaschel, Walter Fong, Steven Ruckdaschel, David Ruckdaschel, and Gerald "Pete" Meyer. Honorary casket bearer was Dr. R.F. Schneider.
Roland Keith Gray, the son of Keith and Louise (Schultz) Gray, was born on September 22, 1921, in Postville. Roland was afflicted with polio at the age of four. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Roland graduated from the Postville High School in 1939 and attended the University of Iowa.
Roland married Helen Meyer on April 12, 1950. He was employed as a bookkeeper at the Postville Farmers Co-op Creamery approximately 20 years. He was the secretary to the Postville Board of Education and business manager at the Postville Community Schools for 22 years. After retiring in 1984, Roland and Helen spent 12 winters in Arizona.
Roland was an avid sports fan. During his high school years, Coach Ivan Blackmer named him student manager of the baseball, basketball and football teams. He accompanied the teams to all out of town games. He was a member of the I-Club at the University of Iowa of over 50 years. He enjoyed traveling.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen in 2007; his brother, Earl (Connie) Gray; one nephew, Robert C. Meyer; and two brothers-in-law, Clinton (Gretchen) Meyer and Robert (Irma) Meyer.
Roland is survived by his nieces and nephews, Keith (Lois) Meyer, Bonnie (Walt) Fong, Kay (Doug) Ruckdaschel, Peggy Davis, Nancy Miller and Keith Gray.
