Funeral Services At Old West For Irene Bakkum 1895-1980
Irene A.H. Bakkum, 84, of Waukon, died Sunday May 25 at the Good Samaritan nursing home.
She was born August 8, 1895 in Allamakee County to Charles and Mary Engrav Barthell. She and Eilert Bakkum were married in Allamakee County March 14, 1917. She was a teacher and a nurses' aide at the Good Samaritan for many years. She was a member of Old West Paint Creek Church where she was very active in church groups and was organist for 35 years.
She is survived by a son Barthell of Waukon; two daughters, Mrs. Earl (Marjorie) Moe of Decorah and Mrs. Paul (LaGertha) Sherman of Waukon; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Martha Bulman, Mrs. Elmer (Esther) Johnson, and Mrs. Lester (Mary Charlotte) Ellingson, all of Waukon. She was predeceased by her husband.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 28 at 1:30p.m. at Old West Paint Creek Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Paul Tobiason officiated. Pallbearers were Duane Bakkum, Keith Bakkum, Arlyn Moe, Randy Sherman, Mark Sherman, and Donald Sherman. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
