Services Held For Olaf Hansen 1893-1973

Funeral services for Olaf Hansen were held at the Schutte Funeral Home, Postville, Thursday, April 19, at 1:30p.m. with the Rev. Dick Harberts officiating. Mr. Hansen died April 17 at Mercy Hospital, Oelwein. Olaf Hansen was born April 1, 1893, the son of Ole and Jenny Lind Hansen, in Drammen, Norway. He received his education in Norway and was baptized and confirmed in his church in Norway. Mr. Hansen came to this country in 1908 at the age of 15. He resided with his uncle and family, Oscar Lind, laboring as a farm hand. He enlisted in the Iowa Infantry National Guard at the age of 24 and also served in the US Army during World War I. He was married to Julia Olsen and the couple farmed north of Postville. He made two trips back to his home in Norway, the last one in May 1954. Following the death of his wife, he moved to the home of his sister, Helga Bilden, and had resided in the Grandview Nursing Home, Oelwein the last eight years. The night before his death, he was awarded the American Legion Golden Certificate as a citation for his 54 years as a member. He was preceded in death by his wife in July 1951; his parents; two sisters and one brother. He is survived by six sisters; two in America, Mrs. Hans (Helga) Bilden, Elgin and Mrs. Alfred (Jherdis) Wigisland, Decorah. The four sisters in Norway are Mrs. Magnhild Borgerson, Mrs. Ingeborg Eriksen, Jenny Hansen and Mrs. Louise Carlsen. There are also many nieces, nephews and cousins. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
