Darlene Zelda Ewing was born November 26, 1930 to Frederick and Geneva (Cahoon) Schlitter. As the story goes, when Darlene was born she was so small that she fit into her father's boot box and that's where her nickname "Boots" came from.
May 28, 1949, Boots married her childhood sweetheart, Stan Ewing, on her parents' farm. From 1951 to 1970, Stan and Boots farmed south of Rossville, where they raised their two daughters, Sharon and Sue. Boots worked as a cook for the Waukon Public School District, where she enjoyed the company of fellow cooks and the students who passed through her line.
Boots was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church and the Rossville Presbyterian Women. Her family will remember Boots for her cooking, crocheting and her love for her husband, Stan. The couple spent many weekends listening and dancing to area music groups, taking drives around the countryside or camping at Goose Island.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (Doug) Kubitz of Monona and Sue (Dave) Burroughs of Waterville; seven grandchildren, Bob (Tracy) Kubitz of Monona, Shelley Kubitz (fiance' Ryan Mahannah) of Rochester, MN, Ryan Schulte, Tracy Schulte, Mike Burroughs, Danielle (Adam) Chase, all of Waukon, and Mitchell Burroughs of Harpers Ferry; five great-grandsons, Kyle, Jordan, Cody, Joseph and Bradyn; two sisters, Marcella (Gordy) Hansmeier and AnnaMae (LaVern) Geno, both of Waukon; four sisters-in-law, Phyllis Welch, Kay (Darrell) Snitker and Ann Ewing, all of Waukon, and Marcella Ewing of Corvallis, OR; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
