Alice Underwood

Alice M. Underwood, age 95, of Lansing died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at The United Methodist Church in Lansing with Pastor Steve Hubbell officiating.

Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing. Visitation was at the church Sunday.

Alice was born in Churchtown June 11, 1913 to William and Matilda (Bauman) Lenz. She married Jesse William "Bill" Underwood July 24, 1938 in Lansing. She was a school teacher, member of PEO and active in the United Methodist Women's group. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by three children - Barbara (Herb) Sohl of Keokuk, David (Margo) Underwood of Mason City and Mary (Steve) George of Roscoe, IL; seven grandchildren - Debbie (Jeff) Spears, Greg (Joni) Sohl, Susie (Travis) Wilhite, Christina (Bob) Hastings, Douglas (Melissa) Underwood, Christopher George and Spc. Michael George; 13 great- grandchildren; and one brother, Curtis Lenz of Lansing.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1993, one granddaughter, one great-grandson and a sister, Evelyn Lenz.

Casket bearers were Christopher George, Greg Sohl, Jeff Spears, Douglas Underwood, Ryan Spears and Travis Wilhite.

The Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing assisted the family.
