John Ralston
John Ralston was born in the little town of Whithorn, Wigtonshire, Scotland, June 3, 1829. He came to America in 1851, landing in New York City, July 9th. He lived there two years, and then, having an intense desire for a farm of his own, went west to the state of Illinois, and shortly after came to Allamakee county. Of this county, he has been a resident for more than fifty-two years.
July 8, 1853, in Newburgh, New York state, he was married to Miss Isabella Archibald, also a native of Whithorn, Scotland.
To them have been born eight children, seven of who are living. Willard, of Waukon, Iowa; Eugenia, of Washington, D.C.; Samuel A., of Lacoma, Iowa; Mrs. J. W. Calvert, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. J. E. Baxter, of Walnut Grove, Minn.; Jessie E., of Centralia, Wash., and G. B. of Jefferson township, Allamakee county. During nearly sixty years of wedded life, only once has death entered their home, when he took their second child, a babe of six months.
On the morning of Dec. 10th, after several weeks of painful illness, he quietly passed away, aged 81 years, 6 months, and 7 days.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning and interment in the Oakland Cemetery.
