Thomas Robert Vaughan, Sr.

Thomas Robert Vaughan, Sr., a resident of Harpers Ferry and formerly of Sumner, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Franciscan Skemp Hospital in LaCrosse, WI from complications following a stroke. He was 79 years old.

Memorial services were held Saturday, May 17 at United Methodist Church in Sumner, with Rev. Shirley Hoffmann Will officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date with military rites at Wayne Cemetery, McIntire.

Tom was the son of James T. and Ivy Smith Vaughan, born January 31, 1929 at McIntire. He was baptized April 1, 1945 at the United Methodist Church in McIntire. He attended McIntire schools and graduated in 1946 at the age of 16.

Thomas was hired by Chicago Great Western (Chicago Northwestern Railroad) as a signal maintainer in 1948. He entered the U.S. Navy Seabees in 1950 and was stationed in San Diego, CA. He served overseas in Guam, Newfoundland and Trinidad before being honorably discharged in 1954. He returned to work for the railroad until his retirement in 1990 after 42 years of service.

September 7, 1958 he was united in marriage with Marlys Drake in Des Moines. Throughout his life, Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, reading, gardening and playing cards. He was a member of the American Legion Post #722 in Harpers Ferry for 51 years. He also enjoyed spending time with family, friends and his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Marlys of Harpers Ferry, he is survived by a son, Thomas Vaughan, Jr. (special friend, Bev Davis) of Sumner; one daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Wade Breitsprecher of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Noah, Lucas, and Leah Breitsprecher; and his dog, Tucker. Also surviving are five sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Ewald, Sally Drake, Janis McAuley, and Barb Drake, all of Des Moines, and Donna Mae Schnoor of Pine River, MN; a brother-in-law, Jim Ewald of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Claude and Essie Drake; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Jeannie Vaughan and Meredith and Betty Vaughan; a nephew, Tim Vaughan; and ten brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Betty and Murray Rankin, Jack Townsley, Bud Drake, Glenn Drake, Donovan Drake, John and Carole Drake, Emery Schnoor, Fred Drake, Larry Drake, and David McAuley.
