ROWE, STEVENS

Jimmy Rowe of this township, brief mention of whose dangerous illness was made in these columns last week, died Sunday morning about 5 o'clock. The direct cause of death is given as congestion of the lungs, the result of taking cold Friday, but he had suffered for some time with stomach and heart trouble and had but a short time to live anyway. Deceased was born in Lincolnheath, England [sic], March 27, 1860. Came to Allamakee county with his parents when about eight years old, settling first on the English Bench, Union City township. In 1882 he married Susan A. Stevens and since then has made his home in this township. Seven children, six of whom are living, were born to this union, and to add to the sadness of the occasion Mrs. Rowe is confined to her bed and not expected to long survive her husband. The funeral took place from the M.E. Church yesterday afternoon, with short services at the house on account of the wife's illness, Rev. Stubbs officiating. Mr. Rowe was an honest, hard working man and was just getting fixed so as to be able to take life easy when his health failed him. He was well liked as a neighbor and friend, as the sixty teams that composed the funeral cortege testified.

Death of James Rowe

It becomes our painful duty to chronicle the death of “Jimmy” Rowe, whose illness has been from time to time noted in these columns. All that home physicians could do was done for him, and a few weeks ago he consulted La Crosse doctors, but no encouragement was given him. He bravely battled with disease, keeping on his feet as long as possible. When his condition would permit, he came to town almost daily to get the war news, he being much interested in the war now going on. He also took much interest in political matters, and was a staunch republican.

James Rowe was born in Lekenheath, England, March 27, 1860. He came to this country when 8 years old and settled on the English Bench, in this county, and here he has since resided. In 1882 he was married to Susan A. Stephens. To them seven children were born, six of whom with his companion remain to mourn their loss. He was a man of generous impulses, always ready to help those less fortunate than himself. Last August he renewed covenant with his God, but overcome by temptation he for a time fell away. During his last illness he was enabled through the mercy of God to find favor and divine acceptance with Him. He died in the full assurance of faith in Christ, Sunday morning, May 29th, 1898.

The death of Mr. Rowe is a peculiarly sad one. Lying upon a sick bed at the now desolate family home is the bereaved widow and mother, unable of weeks past to minister to her sick husband or the family of six little children so sadly bereft, and who by reason of their tender years stand in such great need of a father’s counsel. May He who “doeth all good things well” watch over them and guide them safely through life.

The funeral took place Tuesday at 3:00 o’clock, from the M.E. church here, brief services being first held at the family home for the benefit of the poor wife and mother unable to be in attendance at the church. Rev. Stubbs’ sermon and prayer were most appropriate and befitting the church being crowded on the occasion. Beautiful flowers had been thoughtfully provided, and the number of teams in the procession from the family home to the church was not far short of one hundred.

Deceased was a member of the A.O.U.W. order and the family will receive the $2,000 benefits. Besides they have a good farm well stocked.
