Jeanne M. McDonald, 89, of Waukon died Monday, March 10, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, March 14 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Jeanne Mary McDonald was born December 21, 1918 in Waukon, the daughter of Emmet F. and Frances L. (Luth) Dougherty. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she remained an active member all her life. Jeanne graduated from Waukon High School in 1936, Waukon Jr. College in 1938 and received her B.S. in Industrial Science-Bacteriology in 1941 from Iowa State University in Ames. She worked in the Dairy Bacteriology department at ISU for 15 months and then as a laboratory technician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

In 1943 she enlisted as a Navy Wave and served two years at the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA and six months at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois, attaining the rank of Pharmacy Mate 1st Class. Following her discharge in 1945, she returned to Mayo Clinic and spent two and one-half years working in the Serology Department.

October 18, 1948 she married Robert Edward McDonald at St. Patrick Church in Waukon. She continued her medical career as a laboratory technician at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, but also worked along with Bob at the Model Cafe, which they owned and operated for several years, and she did the bookkeeping for their Dolly Madison Dairy business.

Jeanne was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary as well as the Waukon Golf and County Club. She also was an original board member of Allamakee Housing, Inc., and continued to serve for over 20 years, many of them as secretary. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting, working crossword puzzles and flower gardening. Jeanne liked getting together with friends to play cards and was a member of several bridge groups. She also treasured spending time with her family and for a number of years enjoyed traveling to the southern states with Bob during the winter.

Survivors include her two daughters, Patty (Frank) Goltz of Waukon and Jan "Mac" (John Campbell) McDonald of Bettendorf; four grandchildren, Matt (Andi) Goltz of Waukon, Ben Goltz of Ramsey, MN, Claire Campbell of Washington, D.C., and Seth Campbell of Bettendorf; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Nick Goltz; a brother-in-law, Don McDonald of Moses Lake, WA; and a sister-in-law, Helen Etteldorf of Waukon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob, who died in 1990; and two brothers, William (Lora) and James (Marge) Dougherty.

Honorary casketbearers were Jac Regan, Mona Campbell, Mary Kay Winke, Marcella McCabe, Lorna Kerndt, Dick and Ann Gearhart, Chuck and Fran Luther, Paul and Theresa Anderson, Harriet Duggan, Fr. Joseph Slepicka, Betty DeBuhr, Ele Klenske, Shirley Schneeberger, Chris Lauerman, Edith Feuerhelm, Marion Keenan and Arlene Martin. Casketbearers were John Kerndt, LeRoy McCabe, Perry Norton, Gary Kolsrud, Bill Walsh and Randy Murphy.
