ANNA LEUI

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bridget's Catholic Church for Anna H. Leui. Rev. F. J. Vallaster officiated at the Requiem mass. Burial was made in Grand Meadow cemetery.

Anna H. Leui, daughter of Jacob and Anna Heirigs Leui, was born on March 14, 1869, on a farm in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, and died December 25, at the age of 85 years. She is the last member of an old and highly respected pioneer family, having been preceded in death by her twin sister, Mrs. E. C. Sonnkalb, on June 7, 1952. Other members of the Leui family preceding her in death were her brothers, August, John and William Leui and her sisters, Emma, Louise and Caroline Leui and Mary Kluss.

Miss Anna, as she was familiarly known, was loved, honored and respected by all who knew her. As a young girl Anna entered the business world as a saleslady at the Crosby store and then was a buyer and saleslady at the former Luhman and Sanders firm. After devoting many years there, she toured Europe in 1910, and while in Rome was privileged an audience with Pope Plus the Tenth.

Later she went to Kearney, Nebraska, and at Vermillion, South Dakota, had her own dress shop. She sold that to return home and assist in the care of her aged mother.

Throughout her life, Anna was active in civic and social affairs. During World War I she played an important part in Red Cross work of the county. She held offices in St. Bridget's circle of which church she was a life long member.

Anna Leui is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. Nellie Gallagher, Parker, South Dakota; Paul L. Sonnkalb, Postville; Mrs. Ben Buren, Leland; Mrs. Harry Gass, Postville; Mrs. Walter Hoffbauer, Willmar, Minnesota; Mrs. Walter Dittmer, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; Howard Leui, Sterling, Illinois; Walter Kluss, Palo Alto, California; Mrs. Mabel Kingsbury, Denton, Texas; Mrs. Arbe Behrens and Mrs. Louis L. Hill, Postville.
