Helen Green 1917-2002

Funeral services for Helen Green were held Monday, November 18, 2002, at 11:00 A. M., in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend James Allison officiated. The Casket Bearers were nephews, Stan Amundson, Tom McMahon, Keith Koth, Jim Kruse, Burnell Koth, Steve Malsed, Larry Zweibohmer, Chuck Koth, Fred Thies, Roger Gibson, Luther Johanningmeier, Mark Johanningmeier, Woody Houser. Special music was provided by Kenneth Timmerman, soloist, and Joann Martins, organist. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia, Iowa. Helen Marie Green, the daughter of Ross Charles Koth and Altha W. (nee Lenth) Koth, was born January 28, 1917, in Monona Township, Clayton County, near Monona, Iowa. She passed away Friday, November 15, 2002, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 17 days. She was baptized March 4, 1917 by Pastor Otto Wappler and confirmed August 31, 1930 by Pastor A. Daugs. Helen attended the Luana Consolidated Schools and graduated from Postville High School in 1934.
Helen was married to Clarence J. Green on June 17, 1937 at Nashua, Iowa. To this union four children were born. Clarence and Helen farmed and produced maple syrup in the Castalia area for many years. Helen had been employed by the Winneshiek County Extension Office in their Youth Program. She was a 4-H Leader and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA, and the KEWS of Castalia. Clarence and Helen were charter members of the Bloomfield Historical Society. She enjoyed her family, quilting, gardening, and traveling. Surviving are three children, Beverly and husband, Jerry Schrandt, and Mary and husband, Leonard Althouse, all of Postville, and Dale and wife, Karen of Castalia; 10 grandchildren, Michelle and Dan Clements, Dallas, TX, Julie and John Hoefler, New Vienna, IA, Nicole and Steve Buchheit, Castalia, Randy and Ellen Althouse, Castalia, IA, Debra Althouse, Luray, VA , Jody and Jake Meyer, Castalia, IA, Lori and Jeff Ameling, Fredericksburg, IA, Stacy and Mark Stock, Waukon, IA, Jeni and Tom Melcher, Castalia, IA, Wendy and Curt Hauser, Louisville, KY; and 17 great grandchildren, Devyn, Austin, Jenna Hoefler, Kayla, Nicholas Buchheit, Ryan, Darin Buchheit, Breanna Althouse, Katherine, Benjamin, Christopher, Rebecca, Nicholas Althouse, Ben, Missy Meyer, Duel, Danielle Stock. Also surviving is one brother, Kenneth Koth and wife, Romilda of Postville, a sister-in-law, Caroline Koth of Waukon, and a brother-in-law, Allen Johanningmeier and wife, Neda, of Mississippi, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarence, who died in 1966, a son, Robert, who died in 1949, a grandson, Stephen Althouse, a brother, Harold Koth, and a sister, Margaret Johanningmeier.
