Lester Jahnke
Lester Joseph Jahnke, son of Henry Fred and Gladys Rosella (Young) Jahnke, was born October 22, 1909 in Winneshiek County near Frankville, Iowa. He died Sunday, October 1, 1995 at his home in Postville, Iowa. He was 85 years old.
He was baptized as an infant and attended the Frankville School in his youth. On June 15, 1932 he was married to Gertrude Ella Luebka at St. Paulo Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. To this union three sons were born. They began farming on Gertrude's family farm and then moved to a farm north of Postville. In 1957 they moved to town.
Lester worked at the egg plant for a short time, then for Milo Meyer's Plumbing and Heating and lastly, he was employed by the City of Postville for many years. Lester liked to go fishing in his early years and enjoyed listening to and watching baseball games on radio and T.V. Lester was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gertrude, who died in 1985; a son, Jimmie, who died in 1952; a grandson, Dennis Jahnke; one brother, Walter Jahnke; a sister, Florence Redenbaugh and a sister who died in infancy.
Surviving are two sons, Leslie and his wife, Lillian of Postville and Ronald and his wife, Marilyn of Waukon; 11 grandchildren, David, Bradley, Mark, Darrell, Wayne, Lyle, Gary and Gregg Jahnke, Lisa Quandel, Susan McNally and Kathy Huinker, and 10 great-grandchildren, Gabrielle McNally, Sarah, Michael, Alex, Rachael, Adam, Jamie, Kerri and Aryn Jahnke and Amanda Klinski. Also surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Lucille Leubka, Mrs. Inez Schutte and Mrs. Frank (Gladys) Atkinson, all of Dubuque, Mrs. Dorothy Schweinefus of Castalia, and Mrs. Elwin (Pearl) Hanneman of Cedar Falls.and a sister-in-law, Virginia Jahnke, of Dubuque, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 5, 1995 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Charles W. Miller officiated. Casket bearers were his grandchildren. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
