Leona Baxter

Leona M. (Howes) Baxter, age 97, of Waukon, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Alan Schmitt officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Leona was born Feb. 19, 1904 in Belgrade, MN in Roseville Township, Kandiyohi County to William E. and Margaret Ann (Cunningham) Howes. She attended St. Patrick's School.

October 10, 1922, she married Leonard T. Baxter at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. They resided on the family farm in rural Waukon, where she was a housewife, and they were members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon.

Her husband Leonard preceded her in death, as did her parents and one daughter, Catherine (Bob) Irons, and all of her brothers and sisters.

Surviving are six children, William (Hazel) of New Albin, Ruth (the late Dave) Rainey of Lewiston, ID, John (Margie) of Waukon, Margaret (Ray) Steinhart of Dickeyville, WI, Lorraine (Don) Skripek of Paynesville, MN, and Sara (Bob) Hrdlicka of Charles City.

Also surviving are 50 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great grandchild.

Casketbearers were the oldest grandchild from each of her seven children's families: Jim Liwer, Connie Mettille, Loretta Baehr, Beth Koehn, Tom Baxter, Suzanne Hansen and Lisa Wamboldt.

Hanson Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
