Emma L. Russell, 94, of Waukon, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, October 4 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Emma Lena was born March 21, 1910, in Eastman, Wis., the daughter of Godfrey and Minnie (Shulka) Mattie. She attended elementary school in the Eastman area.

On February 9, 1935, she married Cecil L. Russell at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Waukon with Rev. Van Nice officiating. Emma and Cecil farmed in the Harpers Ferry area for many years. She was very active and worked very hard on the farm. Emma also enjoyed working in her flower garden, baking for her family and friends, and playing cards.

Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Loging of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Elsie Mattie of La Crosse, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil, who died September 23, 1994; two sisters, Velma Welsh and Violet Darrow; and three brothers, Frank, Fred, and Archie Mattie.

Honorary casketbearers were Mike Schulte, Randy Dehli, and James Zezulka. Casketbearers were Floyd, George, and Albert Ashbacher, Donnie Russell, Tim Phipps, and Art Cornelius.
