Henry "Hank" Herman Schulte, age 86, of Waukon, died Nov. 15, 2002, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Services were held Mon., Nov. 18, 2002, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Fr. Jerry Blake officiating. Internment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery-Hanover. Hanson's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Hank was born Jan. 12, 1916, in rural Dorchester the son of Henry T. and Mary (Conner) Schulte. He married Gertrude Burke on Feb. 4, 1937, at St. Mary's Hanover. He attended local schools. As a farmer, Hank was involved in everything that touched his life. He was an active member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO) and served as President of the Allamakee Branch. He was instrumental in establishing the Northeast Iowa Sales Barn in rural Waukon. He was Chairman of the Good Roads Association and worked hard for many road improvements throughout Allamakee County. He was an advocate in the building of Veteran's Memorial Hospital in honor of his brothers serving in the military. Hank was a member of St. Mary's-Hanover for many years while farming and raising his family in Dorchester. He served as Trustee to the Parish. When Gert and he retired in 1978 and moved to Waukon, they joined St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, woodworking, softball games, and spending time with his family. He was always there to help others in any way he could and worked hard for the things he believed in. Survivors include eight children and their spouses: Doris (Bob) Eglseder, Mavis (Verdine) Berns, Eileen (Bernard) Berns, all of Waukon, Gary (Janis) Schulte of Dorchester, Ella Mae (Bill) Collins of Waunakee, Wis., Rick (Sue) Schulte of Dorchester, Rita (Bob) Irons of Waukon, and Wayne (Jean) Schulte of Dorchester; 27 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Gavin of Waukon; and a brother, Frank Schulte of Dorchester.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude; parents, Henry T. and Mary (Connor) Schulte; an infant son, Gerald; a sister, Theresa Schulte; brothers Matthew, Lawrence, Joseph, Vince, Clarence, and Bernard Schulte. Pall bearers were his grandsons Brad Berns, Brent Berns, Bryan Berns, Eric Schulte, Shawn Schulte, Reggie Schulte, Scott Irons, and David Irons. Honorary pall bearers were his granddaughters.©Waukon Standard 2002
