Services Held For Alvin Thoreson
Services for Alvin Thoreson, 78, were held Friday, Nov. 7, 1980 at 11 a.m. at Community Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dennis E. Morey officiated. Schutte Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
Alvin William Thoreson, the son of Olaf and Minnie (Nesbitt) Thoreson, was born August 18, 1902 in Winona County, Minnesota. He died Nov. 4, 1980 at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, Mason City.
He was educated in the rural schools and completed a term at the Winona Business College. For several years he worked on the family farm before enrolling at Iowa State College. Alvin spent several years doing DHIA testing in both the Postville and West Union areas.
June 5, 1937 he married Murtis Weihe. After serving briefly as the manager of the Westy, Wis. Cooperative Creamery, he managed the Garnavillo Coop. Creamery from 1937-1945, the year the family moved to a farm south of Postville. There he took pride in developing a herd of registered Aberdeen Angus. He received an Outstanding Dairy Farmer Award and was named three years as a Progressive Holstein Breeder.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Zoe (Mrs. Lyle Abrahamson), Britt; two sons: Dr. J. D., Mason City and Dr. Richard, Washington, D. C.; seven grandchildren; three brothers: Robert of Peterson, Minnesota; Arthur of Franklin, N. C.; and Donald of St. Charles, Minn.; and three sisters: Mrs. Ole (Marie) Boyum, Rushford, Minn.; Ruby Reps, Winona, Minn.; and Mrs. James (Alice) Whitlock, Brainerd, Minn.
He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, a trustee, and a member of the pastor nominating committee. He was active in the County and District Holstein Associations, and served as District President. He served on the Postville Creamery Board for a number of years, and was a member of the Advisory Board for the Good Samaritan Center.
