Services Held For Fred H. J. Thoma
Fred H. J. Thoma, the son of George Thoma and Louise Meyer Thoma, was born in Clayton county, Iowa on December 21, 1887. He was baptized in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on March 18, 1888 and confirmed on March 23, 1902. He died suddenly on September 1, 1965 at the age of 77 years, eight months and 11 days.
Fred lived his entire life in this area, being educated in the schools of the area. He was married to Emma Plaht on February 6, 1918. To this union were born two sons and one daughter. Following their marriage they began farming east of Postville, and moved to town in 1950.
Fred served as the president of the school board for the South Grove School, and he was engaged in selling Pioneer Seed Corn for the past 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bertha Thoma and Adaila Thoma, of Postville.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Leonard of Postville and Wesley of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Ruth, Mrs. Ernest Schulz of Rock Rapids, Iowa; two brothers, Louis of Postville and Lawrence of Luana; two sisters, Lena, Mrs. Walter Plaht of Postville and Alta, Mrs. Wm. J. Klingbeil of Mesa, Arizona; eight grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, on Saturday, September 4, at 2:00 p.m. Interment was in the Postville cemetery with the Rev. Charles E. Witt, Pastor of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating.
