Leo McCormick

Leo J. McCormick, 87, of Waterville died Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 12 at 10:30 am at St. Ann's - St, Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial will be held in St. Joseph's at Paint Rock Cemetery, Harpers Ferry.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 11 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 4 p.m. scripture service, and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church Wednesday.

Leo James McCormick was born July 6, 1920 near Waterville, the son of Thomas and Mary (Heim) McCormick. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry. Leo's mother died when he was four years old. He was raised by his aunts and uncles and attended rural country school in rural Waterville.

October 27, 1942 he married Virginia Howe at St. Joseph's Paint Rock Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry. Leo and Virginia farmed the family farm in Paint Creek Township. They raised dairy cows, hogs and grain. Leo had received dairy awards over the years. He enjoyed visiting and helping his neighbors whenever they needed help. Leo has been a resident at the Good Samaritan Center since 2006.

Leo was a member of St. Ann's - St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spending time with his family at the farm for gatherings. Leo always had time for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed going to farm sales and ice fishing.

Survivors include his wife Virginia of Waterville; his children, Karen (Roger) Melcher of Harpers Ferry, and Ken (Janice) McCormick and Kent (Joan) McCormick, both of Waterville; 12 grandchildren, Marty, Jeff, Tom and Brian Melcher, Jacqui Melcher Van Minsel, Shannon McCormick Stone, and Dustin, Colby, Ian, Keith, Michael and Jacob McCormick; and 14 great-grandchildren, Cathy, Ryan and Laura Melcher, James and Jared Melcher, Jacine Johanningmeier and Kendal Van Minsel, Mason Stone and Brenden Krogen, Michelle Miller, and Reagen, Kole, Keira and Reese McCormick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Ambrose McCormick; and four sisters, Marie Thekla McCormick, Sr. Catherine McCormick BVM, Bertha Roederer and Mary Noe.

Honorary casketbearers were Lester and Tom Thomson, Roger Ellefson, Otto Nuehring, Rod, Jeff and Wayne Kelly, Cletus Heffern, and Nick Tilleraas. Casketbearers were his grandchildren.
