Helen Gertrude (Meyer) Gray
Helen Gertrude (Meyer) Gray passed away Thursday, July 26, 2007, in the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 3 months, and 11 days.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa, with the Reverend Steve Brackett officiating. Special music was provided by Marian Schutte, organist and Kim Schutte, soloist. The Casket Bearers were Keith Meyer, Doug Ruckdaschel, Walter Fong, Steve Ruckdaschel, David Ruckdaschel, Gerald "Pete" Meyer, Milton "Mick" Meyer, the Honorary Casket Bearer was Dr. R. F. Schneider. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Helen was born April 15, 1920, in Postville, Iowa, to Christian and Amanda (Foels) Meyer. She was baptized May 17, 1920, in St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Reverend E. Schmidt and confirmed there April 8, 1935, by the Reverend R. B. Garten. She grew up on the farm along with her two brothers, Clinton and Robert. Helen attended the Lybrand School and graduated from Postville High School in 1937. Helen had taught in the rural schools for five years and then became employed at the Postville State Bank, where she worked for 40 years.
On April 12, 1950 Helen was married to Roland Keith Gray in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig. She retired in 1984. They spent 12 winters in Arizona. Helen enjoyed sports and reading.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Robert (Irma) Meyer and Clinton (Gretchen) Meyer, a nephew, Robert C. Meyer, and a brother-in-law, Earl (Connie) Gray.
Surviving are her husband, Roland, two nieces, Bonnie (Walter) Fong and Kay (Doug) Ruckdaschel and one nephew, Keith (Lois) Meyer.
