IRVIN F. SNITKER
Irvin F. Snitker, son of Elmer Harry and Emma Liddie (Bechtel) Snitker, was born August 27, 1913 on his parents Ludlow Township farm near Waukon, Iowa. He died May 13, 1995 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.
Irvin was baptized and confirmed in German at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. He was a lifetime resident of Allamakee County. He attended Ludlow #3 rural school.
On June 23, 1938 he was married to Arlene Harriet Geving at the Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church Parsonage by Rev. A. P. Lea. To this union, four children were born.
Irvin was a meatcutter by profession and was employed by Hygrade in Postville for 20 years. He was a former union steward for the meat packers union while at Hygrade. He also farmed in Jefferson, Paint Creek and Lansing townships and did some carpentry work after retiring. He was a long time member of Zion United Church of Christ where he also served as a church council member. Irvin liked fishing and playing cards. He was known as a hard worker. He was also a sports fan who followed the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs in particular.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Merlin, Robert, Lawrence and Walter Snitker, and a sister, Arlene Denny.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Snitker of Waukon; two sons, Ronald and wife Therese Snitker of Manchester and Donald and wife Mary Jo Snitker of Oelwein; two daughters, Joan and husband Robert Ingles of Waterloo and Sandra and husband John Harrington of Cedar Falls; two brothers, Ben and wife Loretta Snitker of Palo and James and wife Betty Snitker of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Marion and husband Robert Wirkler of Monona, Gertrude Hangartner of Postville, Shirley and husband Don Johnson of Decorah, and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 16, 1995 at Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Richard Eick officiating. Casketbearers were Tim Ingles, Jerry Ingles, Kurt Snitker, Sean Harrington, Christopher Snitker, James Payne, Larry Snitker and Rick Snitker. Honorary casketbearers were Tracie Snitker, Emily Snitker, Robin Payne, Kristin Snitker, Anne Snitker and Kasandra Harrington. Arrangements were made by Martin Funeral Home of Waukon. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery.
