Leonard Thoma, 75, died Wednesday morning, Dec 6, 1995, in his home after a sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St Paul Lutheran Church, by the Rev charles Miller. Burial: Postville Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at Schutte Funeral Home, Postville.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen; two sons, Lee A. and wife Mary of Elgin and Russ and Wife Cathy of Gurnee, Ill.; a granddaughter, Kristin, and a grandson, Brian, both of Gurnee; and a brother, Wesley of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Ruth Schulz of Rock Rapids.Gazette, The (Cedar Rapids-Iowa City, IA)

Funeral services for Leonard Thoma were held Saturday, December 9, 1995 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. The Reverend Charles W. Miller officiated. Ronald Meyer was the soloist and Joann Martins was the organist. The Schutte Funeral Services of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery. Honorary casket bearers were Dale Meyer, Gene Suddendorf, Don Kugel, Myrl Dickman, LaVerne Stumme, Darwin Ellis, Bob Dull, Ralph Auer, and Tennis Mork. Casket bearers were Milo Heins, Jim Kruse, Bob Jacos, Lyle Kneeskern, Kevin Cronk, Bob Zwirlein, and Daryl Bachtell.
Leonard Herman George Thoma was born March 9, 1920 on a farm near Postville, Iowa. He was the son of Fred H. J. and Emma (Plaht) Thoma. Leonard died suddenly Wednesday, December 6, 1995 at his home in Postville. He had reached the age of 75 years, 8 months and 27 days.
He was baptized June 12, 1920 by the Rev. E. Schmidt and confirmed on March 25, 1934 by the Rev. R. Carten, all in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Leonard attended the South Grove School near his home and graduated from Postville High School in 1938.
On November 12, 1949, he was married to Ellen Marie Nuehring in St. Paul Lutheran Church, by the Rev. F. R. Ludwig. To this union two sons were born. Leonard farmed on the family farm until 1959 when they moved to Postville. He was the custodian at St. Paul Lutheran Church for 25 years. He has also been a bank courier to the computer center at Lansing, a substitute mail carrier, bus driver and provided the community with many other services.
Leonard touched many lives, always ready and willing to help wherever and whenever he could. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He had served as secretary for the Postville Bowling Association and most recently had served as Treasurer of the Postville Lions Club. Leonard was honored for his service to the Lions Club and the community at a surprise dinner in April of 1995.
We are blessed to have had Leonard as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
He is preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife Ellen; two sons, Lee A. Thoma and his wife, Mary, of Elgin, Russ Thoma and his wife Cathy of Gurnee, IL, and two grandchildren, Kristin and Brian Thoma, also of Gurnee, IL. Also surviving is a brother, Wesley Thoma and his wife, Delores of Cedar Rapids, and a sister, Ruth and her husband Ernie Schulz of Rock Rapids, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
