William "Bill" Welper
William "Bill" H. Welper, 86, of Houston, MN, formerly of Waukon, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston, MN. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Laura Odegard officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
William Harold Welper was born August 12, 1920 in the rural French Creek area of Lansing. His parents were Theodore and Mathilda (Hausman) Welper. Bill was baptized and confirmed at the French Creek Methodist Church and attended French Creek #1 rural school and Lansing High School.
August 19, 1948 he married Dorothy Arlene Heidemann in Anamosa. They farmed in the French Creek area, operating a dairy herd and raising beef cattle, hogs, chickens, and grain for many years until moving to Waukon in the early 1970s. Bill also worked as a night guardsman for Northern Engraving in Lansing and drove school bus for several years. After moving to Waukon he worked for Allamakee County in the road maintenance department until retiring in 1989. He was proud of his membership in the Teamsters' Union.
Bill had a fishing trailer on the Mississippi River where he loved to spend time fishing and visiting with other people on the river. He was also an avid car racing fan, going to local stock car races and watching others on television.
Survivors include his three children, Marsha (Lawrence) Benda of Waukon, Lou Ann (Darrell) Busness of La Crescent, MN and Dean Welper of Houston, MN; eight grandchildren, Tim (Casey) Benda, Tom (Jennifer) Benda, Tanya (Adam Schnuelle) Benda, Theodore (Holly Callahan) Benda, Travis Benda, Chad (Kim Cassidy) Busness, Seth Busness, and Nicole (Jason) Nelson; five great-grandchildren, Rose Benda, Addison and Abigail Schnuelle, and Chace and Jordin Busness; and a sister, Ruth Rask of Lansing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy, who died in 1986; a granddaughter, Kristi Busness; and a great-granddaughter, Kaydeen Busness.
Casketbearers are his grandchildren.
