Service of Celebration for the Life of Virgil Harris
Virgil John Harris was born December 6, 1925, at Postville, Iowa, to Obert and Clara (Klein) Harris. He passed away Thursday, November 23, 2006, in Clayton County, south of Postville, Iowa at the age of 80 years.
He was baptized and confimed in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig. Virgil attended the West Grove country school in Post Township, Allamakee county, Iowa.
On August 24, 1945 he was married to Florence May Myhre of Caledonia, Minnesota, in the Wilmington Church, in Houston County, Minnesota, by the Reverend Leas. To this union four children were born, James Alyn, Richard Lee, John Frederick, and Jean Marie. Florence died June 9,1952 as the result of a fire that accidentally started while she wash filling the heating stove with wood. Later, Virgil was married to Jean.Virgil learned the trade of masonary and worked with concrete most of his life. He became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville on June 6, 2004.
Virgil is preceded in death by his wife, Florence, and his wife Jean, his children James, December 25, 1979, Richard, December 4, 1978, John, April 11, 1964 and Jean Harris Claire, 1998: his siblings Leo "Dutch" Harris, 1979, Milo Harris, 1988, Robert "Bill" Harris, Sr., 1994, George Harris, 1979, Donald Harris, 2003, Russell Harris, 1984, Gertrude (Harris) Hangartner Bluck, 1986, Hazel (Harris) Pearcy, 1988, and an infant sibling who died in 1925.
Surviving are three sisters, Beulah "Boots" (Harris) Meyer Schultz, Postville, Ruth (Harris) Burnham, Sparta, WI, and Lula (Harris) Kruse and husband Marvin of Florida, sisters-in-law: Lillian (Dutch) Harris, Postville, and Donna (Bill) Harris, Elgin, IA, Jacque (Don) Harris, Anna Jean Miller (Russell) Harris, Manchester, IA, and a brother-in-law Robert (Gertrude) Bluck, Preston, MN. Also surviving are five grandchildren: (Richard's children): Florence, Trina Marie Wulf, and Lana, and (Jean's children): John Claire and Norman Claire Jr., 7 great-grandchildren: (Norman Jr.): Joel and Preston Claire; (Trina): Jacob and James; (Lana): Craig; (Florence): Devon. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
