Funeral Services for Harlan Dean Foels were held Saturday, September 28, 2002, at 1:30 P. M. in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Gary Catterson officiated, with Pastor Mark Griffin delivering the Message. Casket Bearers were: Leonard Althouse, Jim Trappe, Lyle Opheim, Dale Jones, Jeff Huinker, Bill Huinker, Mike Monroe, Loren Foels, Kedric Groth. Special music was provided by the Bartlein Family. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Harlan Dean Foels, the son of Harlan Walter Foels and Harriet Joyce Marfilius Foels, was born February 28, 1942, in Post Township, Allamakee County, near Postville, Iowa. He passed away Monday, September 23, 2002, while working at his job in Postville. He was dedicated at the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville on July 26, 1942, by the Reverend L. H. Newhouse and confirmed there in December of 1954, by the Reverend Walter T. Martin. Dean made a decision for Jesus on September 16, 1980. Dean started first grade in the Minert School and then transferred to the Postville School, where he participated in 4-H and FFA and graduated in 1960. He joined the Wisconsin National Guard in 1963 and served until 1969. On June 18, 1967 he was married to Shirley Ann Sampson at the Frankville Presbyterian Church. To this union two children were born, Christa and Karsten. Dean farmed for many years, and he also drove the school bus for the Postville School. He had driven truck for Earl Ruckdaschel and owned and operated an electronics and radio repair business and the D & S Hobby Shop. In 1966 Dean became an Amateur Radio Operator (HAM), and was the Director of Iowa 75 meter net for one term. He was a member of the Silver Spike Model Railroad Club and also had a radio control airplane shop at his farm, where he also did chain saw sharpening. He was employed by Four County Ag in Postville for four years. Surviving are his wife, Shirley, one daughter, Christa Lynne and her husband, Richard Allen Parker, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and one son, Karsten Albert Foels of Postville, one brother, Calvin Foels and his wife, Betty Ann (nee Kirkestue), of Postville, two nephews, Michael Scott Foels and wife, Sherri, and Steven Lee Foels and wife, Janna and their children, Cole and Ashley. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Harriet. Dean was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville and had served on the Board of Trustees.
