Mrs. Chriistofferson Passes On Friday
Born in Norway, Deceased Was 70 Years Old
Mary Olson (Christofferson), the daughter of Nels and Martha Amundsen Olson was born at Lardoff, near Bergen, Norway, on August 8,1866, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alice Backhaus, at 3:30 p. m., Friday, November 27,1936, at the age of seventy years, three months and nineteen days.
At the age of five years she came with her parents to America, making the voyage in a sailing vessel which required seven weeks to cross the Atlantic. They came to Lansing, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Glenwood. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the Norwegian Lutheran church of Glenwood. Later in life she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Postville. She received her education in the rural school at Glenwood.
On March 14,1888, she was united in marriage with Walter Christofferson, who preceded her in death fourteen years ago, on October 7,1922. This union was blessed with twelve children, eight sons and four daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Christofferson spent their entire wedded life together on farms in Allamakee and Clayton counties. For the past eight years she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Backhaus. She enjoyed these declining years visiting among her children.
Since last April, Mrs. Christofferson has been in ill health and since August a constant and patient sufferer. She has received loving and tender care from her daughter Alice, assisted by the others of her children, and all twelve were at her bedside when she passed away.
She leaves her twelve children, Mrs. Clara Bente and Mrs. Anna Bente, of Elkader; Henry, of Monona; Elmer, of Ossian; Mrs. Alice Backhaus, Mrs. Velma Enyart, Louis, William, Elbe, Herman, Harvey and Leonard, all of Postville. There are also fourteen grandchildren who mourn her passing.
Mrs. Christofferson was a devoted wife and loving mother, possessed of many good qualities of head and heart, and during her long residence in this locality was known to all as a good neighbor and friend, and the sympathy of all who knew this kindly, christian wife and mother goes out in full measure to the bereaved family.
The funeral was held from the Community Presbyterian church in Postville on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. F. Galloway. Interment was made in the family plot in Postville cemetery. This was on the same page as my greatgrandmother's obit and was probably from the Postville Herald. Thought someone might be interested. Think the death date should be 1938 not 1936.
