Ruth Catherine Auer
Ruth Catherine Auer, daughter of Clarence Patrick and Theresa (Grant) Hayes, was born Jan. 14, 1927 at Dubuque, Iowa. She died Sunday, April 24, 1994 in St. Mary's Hospital at Rochester, Minn. She was 67.
She attended St. Rafael's and Jackson Schools in Dubuque. On March 1, 1947 she married Ralph Joseph Auer in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque. To this union, three children were born. From 1927 to 1954 Ruth lived in Dubuque. In 1954 the couple moved to their present home west of Postville. They owned and operated their own business from 1954 to 1978 called the "Uptown Tap". Ruth loved and enjoyed her family, their cabin on the Mississippi, and fishing and nature activities with Ralph. She was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Postville, and had been a member of the Rosary Society.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Theresa (Grant) Hayes, who died shortly after her birth, her father, who raised her, and her mother, Marjorie (Schmitz) Hayes, who raised her.
Surviving are her husband, Ralph; two daughters, Linda Holthaus and her husband Cleo of Castalia and Deanna Auer of Postville; a son, Terry Auer of Postville; three grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Hayes and his wife Marilyn and Ronald Hayes and his wife Donna, all of Dubuque; four sisters, Patricia Gatewood and Sandra Wagner and her husband Michael, all of Dubuque, Sherry Reinelt and her husband Robert of Bonfield, Ill. and Kathy Arensdorf and her husband Thomas of Eldridge; an aunt, Louise Elgin of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass was held Wednesday, April 27 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville, Rev. Roger L. Katz officiating, assisted by Rev. Richard Kuhyn of Ossian. Special music was provided by the St. Bridget Choir, and a solo was sung by Sue Lienau, accompanied by Carol Katsumes, organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Casket bearers were Shawn Holthaus, Leslie Livingood, Ryan Holthaus, Mervil Mabb, Chad Auer, Jeff Wagner, Steven Hayes, and Tom Hogan, Jr.
