Violet Fern (Gordanier) Sherburne, married to former Lone Tree resident Robert Sherburne, died on April 22, 2006. She was born December 12, 1929, in Postville, Iowa, to Horace and Ella (Meyer) Gordanier. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Postville. She passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006, at her home in Sumner, Iowa, at the age of 76.

Violet began rural school at the age of four, before transferring to the Postville school system when the family moved to town. She graduated from Postville High School in 1947. After high school she continued working at Gordanier Cleaners and then took a job as bookkeeper at John Falb Motor Company to earn money for college. In 1953, she graduated from the university of Iowa College of Nursing and began her nursing career in Iowa City.

On July 11, 1954 Violet married Robert Sherburne. Violet worked in hospitals in El Paso, TX and Omaha, NE while Robert was in the service. The couple and their family moved throughout Iowa before settling in Sumner in 1967, where they owned and operated Sherburne's, Inc., a farm implement dealership. She served as bookkeeper for the business until it closed in 1986. After the last child left home in 1982 she returned to nursing and worked at Sumner Community Hospital through August 1999. While in Sumner she was an active member of St. John Lutheran church - Martha Circle, Chapter FH of P.E.O. (past president), Eastern Star (past Worthy Matron), Culture Club and the Red Hat Society.

Violet provided 18 years of nursing care to the community. We have appreciated the many comments about her caring, personal bedside manner. Her children and gradchildren treasured her support of their numerous activities, which she attended with great regularity, regardless of distance. Violet and Robert loved to travel and planned at least one big trip each year. She prepared detailed scrapbooks, which documented each trip, and she thoroughly enjoyed reliving the memories years later. she also enjoyed golfing and playing bridge, and was a huge Hawkeye fan.

Violet is survived by her husband, Robert and four children, Steven Sherburne, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Linda (Marc) Begelow, Novi, Michigan; Bradley (Lisa) Sherburne, New Hampton, Iowa; and Mary Sherburne, Aurora, Illinois. Grandchildren include: Diane Sherburne, Aaron (Shauna), Amber and Ben Bigelow, Amanda and Kellen Sherburne, and Lindsay Miller. Other survivors include sister Bernice McCaffrey, Los Angeles, California; sister Murtis (Dr. Andrew) Smith, Waterloo, Iowa; and sister-in-law Shirley (Dr. Stanley) Inhorn. She is preceded in death by her parents Horace and Ella; her step mother Sarah (Stinson) Gordanier; her brother and sister-in-law Howard and Rosamond Gordanier; and sister Opal.
