Roger Kugel
Roger W. Kugel, 80, of Waukon, Iowa, died Monday, May 23, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, following a sudden illness. Funeral services were held Friday, May 27 at First Baptist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Danny Volbrecht officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.
Roger Willard Kugel was born December 19, 1924, in rural Waukon, the son of Carl and Esther (Hermeier) Kugel. He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Roger attended Ludlow No. 1 Rural School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1942. Later in life he graduated from a welding program at NICC in Calmar, Iowa. Following school he began farming with his parents.
On April 15, 1953, he married Mary Ann Muchow at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Roger and Mary farmed at several locations in Allamakee County. He also worked for Anderson Feed in Waukon for 14 years, did construction work for Richard Loven and Bill Bresnahan, and spent several years with Bituma-Stor in Marquette, in addition to working at numerous other odd jobs and special projects in the area.
Since the early 1980s Roger has been an active member of First Baptist Church in Waukon. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to fish, hunt, pick blackberries, raise flowers and garden, and hunt for mushrooms. He also enjoyed bowling, playing pool, trap shooting and going to family gatherings.
Survivors include his wife Mary of Waukon; seven children, Susan (Donald) Stuckwisch of Cedar Rapids, Sandra (Keith) Schuler of Johnston, Iowa, Louis Kugel of Fayetteville, N.C., Sally Muller of Randalia, Iowa, Sharon (David) Zimmerman of Towanda, Kansas, Selma (Dwayne) White of Mt. Hope, Wis., and Larry (Barbara) Kugel of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; 22 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie Winter of Postville, and LaVonne Ewing and Ileta Oakland, both of Waukon; and two brothers, Donald (Barb) Kugel of Lansing, Mich., and Eldo Kugel of Postville.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruth Cooper.
His grandchildren will serve as casketbearers and his great-grandchildren as honorary casketbearers.
